CDOT Open Meeting Update
The Colorado Department of Transportation held an Open Meeting on Thursday, December 8 from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. at the North Branch Library in Silverthorne. The presentation and following discussion centered around hazmat truck routing and safety along the Highway 6 corridor in Keystone.
In 1987, CDOT created the current hazardous materials routes in Colorado. Since that time they have not been updated or changed. A route that is of particular interest to our Keystone community is Loveland Pass. CDOT is considering alternatives to this route but we must vocalize our concerns about the hazmat trucks traveling through Keystone.
It was presented to both CDOT and CSP to eliminate hazmat trucks from using Loveland Pass in an effort to increase safety along the Keystone Parkway. The issue was heard by CDOT and they suggested as a first measure to increase safety, to create two speed limits along highway 6 in Keystone. The current speed of 45 mph would remain for all non-commerdial vehicles and a reduced speed of 30 mph for all commercial vehicles. CDOT will be looking into making this change. Stay tuned as we work towards a safer Keystone Parkway.
